GROTTE DI FRASASSI

DISCOVERING THE CAVES

We can say with certainty that a systematic search for speleologists and geologists in the Frasassi area began in 1948, thanks to the activity of the Marche Speleological Group of Ancona. However, it must be remembered that even in the period between the two wars there were some explorations and researches by scholars of prehistory and natural sciences, but they were sporadic episodes.

Just in 1948, and precisely on June 28, Mario Marchetti, Paolo Beer and Carlo Pegorari of the aforementioned Speleological Group discovered the entrance to the Grotta del Fiume. Numerous other explorations and discoveries will take place in the area, thanks to the Caves Groups of the Italian Alpine Club (C.A.I.) of Jesi and Fabriano. In 1966 a member of the Fabriano Speleological Group, Maurizio Borioni, will find a further branch within the Grotta del Fiume, over a kilometer in length. From this moment the explorations and researches became more assiduous and enthusiastic. Five years later, in July 1971, a new discovery. This time, some young people from Jesi find themselves in front of a narrow opening from which a considerable current of air comes out.

SANTUARIO DI LORETO

THE BASILICA

The basilica, begun in 1469, sponsored by Paul II, was the work of various artists who succeeded each other, giving it the appearance that is visible today to the pilgrim. The apses are the work of Giuliano da Maiano, Baccio Pontelli built the walkways, giving the sanctuary the appearance of a fortress; Giuliano da Sangallo created the dome of Brunelleschi's matrix; Donato Bramante worked on various modifications and consolidations. It was completed in 1587 with the construction of the façade in late Renaissance style of Florentine origin by three architects: Giovanni Boccalini, Giovan Battista Ghioldi and Lattanzio Ventura.

The basilica consists of a hemicycle and 13 apse chapels in late Gothic style of Florentine derivation, called chapels of the nations. The dome, decorated with frescoes by Cesare Maccari, you can recognize the cycle of the Litany of Laureto, the Holy Trinity surrounded by the Thrones, Cherubim Dominations, Seraphim, Powers, Principalities, the archangels Michael Raphael and Gabriel and the invocations to Mary as Queen.
